Dr. Amy E. Foxx-Orenstein completed Fellowships in gastroenterology, nutrition, and therapeutic endoscopy at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, and became the first female faculty member of the GI division. At VCU, she also collaborated with basic science colleagues characterizing neurotransmitter effects of the peristaltic reflex, that matured to a career of clinical practice and research in intestinal motility along with functional intestinal disorders. Her research and work took her from Richmond to Rochester, MN, and then on to Scottsdale, AZ, where she is Professor of Medicine, Co-Director of Motility, and Director of the Constipation and Pelvic Floor Program at Mayo Clinic. She was founder and director of the Mayo Clinic Arizona Weight and Wellness Solutions outcomes research program. Dr. Foxx-Orenstein served on the ACG Board of Trustees from 1999-2009, and served as ACG President in 2007. Current clinical and research interests include IBS, obesity, pelvic floor disorders, constipation, fecal incontinence, autonomic disorders, functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, and gut microbiota. She has authored numerous articles, abstracts, and book chapters, and held editorial responsibilities on many GI journals.
