The Low FODMAP diet was developed by the team at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. The team identified that a family of short chain carbohydrates (called FODMAPs) were major dietary triggers of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) (which affects 10-15% of the population in the United States). The Low FODMAP Diet now has a high level of clinical evidence and is becoming the primary therapy for managing IBS. The diet is highly effective in 3 out of 4 IBS patients.
Monash has built the world’s largest FODMAP food composition database and utilised digital technology (The Monash University Low FODMAP diet App) to help health professionals and patients ‘implement’ the diet. Additionally a food certification system (Monash University Low FODMAP Certified) has also been developed to assist consumers to make informed decisions about the suitability of certain foods in the management of their IBS.
