(18) From Progressivism to Experimentalism: Shared Affiliations in Modern Hindi and Urdu Literature, 1930-1960

3/22/2018
7:30 PM - 9:30 PM
Location: Jefferson, Mezzanine Level

This panel investigates modernism and progressivism’s distinct trajectories in Hindi and Urdu. Literary histories of these languages have tended to treat the major artistic movements of the twentieth century—romanticism, progressivism, modernism, and experimentalism—as separate, discrete entities. This panel reads modernism and progressivism across languages, and considers them in conversation with their parallel and sometimes opposed movements.

Through three papers addressing major writers (Muktibodh, Manto, Rajinder Singh Bedi, Krishan Chander, Miraji) from new lenses, this panel asks anew: How did modernism engage with other narrative modes such as realism? What are the points of convergence and divergence in Hindi and Urdu literatures in this period of anticolonial nationalism? Finally, how does modernist and progressive writing rethink the nation, gender, and sexuality, as well as concepts of the international in the background of independence and the Cold War? Papers address concepts of internationalism, the dialectic between realism and modernism, and shared concerns about sexuality.
