Organized Panel Session

(63) Airs, Waters, Places and the Peoples Who Use and Abuse All of Them in Southeast Asia

3/23/2018
10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: McKinley, Mezzanine Level

Sponsored By AAS Southeast Asia Council (SEAC) and TRaNS Journal

This panel addresses issues of environmental contamination in Southeast Asia, the health risks associated with them, and the human response to them.  The presentations will progress from the micro-level of one Vietnamese island, to the mid-size levels of a dense urban community in Manila and the inhabitants of one costal area of Vietnam, to the regional risks of and responses to the haze that affects six countries in Southeast Asia every year.  Pham Thi Bich Ngoc will present evidence that the concept of a sense of place has changed environmentally detrimental behaviours on the part of residents of Cu Lao Cham Vietnam.  Maria Carinnes P. Alejandria-Gonzalez will discuss how the residents of Manila's largest informal settlement attempt to attend to their physical well-being while living at the confluence of several downstream flows of pollutants.  Hoàng Thi Ngoc Ha will examine the competing and conflicting benefits and detriments of the tourist industry and aquaculture in the Cat Ba Archipelago, on the edge of Ha Long Bay in Vietnam for its residents.  Helena Varkkey will argue that the annual haze in much of Southeast Asia is so detrimental to human health that it has a negative effect on national economies in the countries affected by it and that the regional response to it is inadequate at best.  Our discussant, Michitake Aso, will provide brief comments on the papers and will lead what we hope will be an extended discussion between the presenters and the audience.
