Organized Panel Session

(83) Two-part Panel:Knowledge Production, Reading Practice, and Meaning Making in Mao's China: Part I, Cultural Production and Party Governance

3/23/2018
10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Wilson A, Mezzanine Level

During the first two decades of the People’s Republic, publishing companies, cultural agencies, and party organs adopted and adapted the productive technologies and organizational systems of the prior capitalist publishing system to serve the needs of state socialism. This panel explores previously unexamined dynamics of socialist cultural production during the Mao era to complicate our understanding of that process. Liu’s and Culp’s papers focus on how new agents of production, respectively the Women’s Federation and a consortium of publishing companies under the Ministry of Culture, generated new periodicals and series publications. In turn, Lu and Yang concentrate on very material processes of book production by illuminating how paper was supplied to print Mao’s Little Red Book and the resurgent technology of archaic woodblock printing was used to make books for connoisseurs.

In combination, the papers demonstrate the diverse ways cultural producers appropriated existing technologies and organizational systems, or invented new ones, to express their messages. These various agents and approaches to textual production developed even as the Chinese Communist Party sought to centralize control of the publishing industry in unprecedented ways. Yet the papers also suggest how genres of text ranging from journals, classics, and series to the Little Red Book were subject to party governance even as they contributed to its development in various ways.

For both of these coordinated panels, the chairs will provide brief framing comments. For panel I, the chair and discussant will each comment for ten minutes at the end of the paper presentations.
