Friday, March 23
10:30 AM - 12:30 PM

This article examines the strategies of adaptation among first-generation Singaporean Malay-Muslim immigrants in the city of Melbourne, Australia. I develop the concept of cosmopolitan adaptation which involves a few processes. First, cosmopolitan adaptation point towards the willingness on the part of Muslim immigrants to reconfigure their notions of Islam in ways that is embracing of secular values and other Muslim cultures. Cosmopolitan adaptation also involves Muslim immigrants’ endeavour at expanding their social networks to include Muslims from other nationalities and non-Muslims in the host society. Another dimension of “cosmopolitan adaptation” pertains to Muslim immigrants’ choice of residence and employment in areas that aided in their integration into the mainstream society.
