2 - The China Biographical Database Project: Collaboration Between Research Projects and Libraries in Addressing Digital Humanities Challenges

Friday, March 23
12:45 PM - 2:45 PM
Location: Roosevelt Room 1, Exhibit Level

After 12 months of experience organizing more than 50 promotional events in Greater China for the China Biographical Database (CBDB) project, we see a rapidly growing demand for training in digital methodologies for Chinese history. Furthermore, databases for the study of historical China are proliferating, and increasing numbers of researchers are participating in database development. This rapid expansion necessitates building a network of discipline-specific software applications and data collections. In addition, specialists in the field must collaborate to establish a set of best practices, standards, and collaborative methods to most effectively utilize digital tools for Chinese historical study.

This paper will discuss how the promotional and training efforts of a large-scale research project in Chinese digital humanities reflects the needs of scholars, as well as what that means for the collaboration between research projects and academic libraries. This paper explains such a point by drawing on the collaborative experience of the Harvard-Yenching Library and Peking University Library with the China Biographical Database, in terms of user engagement, training, and data storage. As we will argue in the paper, the library should see itself not as a space where books are stored, but as a medium through which scholars and knowledge can connect. Academic librarians play an increasingly critical role in facilitating such connections.
