15 - Interrogating Urbanization in India Part I: Structural Challenges and Transformations

7/6/2018
8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Location: Tamarind, New Building

This is the first of a two-part panel series that aims to foster a dialogue on urbanization in India between qualitative and quantitative scholars across a number of disciplines from France, India, and the United States. India is among the fastest urbanizing regions in the world, and the interdisciplinary interrogation of urbanization processes in India promises to yield new theoretical insights. These panels consist of scholars engaged in a survey of approximately 5500 households in the National Capital Region around Delhi (Delhi-NCR) alongside scholars carrying out careful qualitative case-based or structural analyses of urban processes in India. This first panel discusses larger structural challenges and transformations in Indian urbanization. Using geographic techniques to understand spatial interconnectedness in urbanization, Shrobona Karkun’s paper questions standard typologies long used in India to characterize urbanization. Amita Bhide’s paper investigates the changing imaginations of urban space in India — and its implications for governance, while Ashwin Parulkar’s paper seeks to understand the contradictions in urban governance through the lens of homelessness in Delhi. Finally, papers by Sumitra Badrinathan and Devesh Kapur, as well as by Megan Reed, interrogate the impact of urbanization on core social behaviors and attitudes such as gender attitudes, marriage, and personal interaction. This panel thus promotes a nuanced discussion of the larger structural implications of urbanization in India.
