108 - Things Through Time: Writing Mumbai’s History and Urbanism

7/7/2018
10:20 AM - 11:50 AM
Location: Magnolia, Lower Ground Floor

In her book, “Partial Connections,” Marilyn Strathern remarks on the question of complexity as one that is caught up with distance and scale. The closer one may be to a “thing” the more complex it may seem, and yet, at a distance, “things” may come to proliferate. Her subject here is writing ethnography, though she intends it more generally. In this panel, we contemplate on things at various scales, times, and distance in order to write about the city they inhabit: Mumbai and its environs.

Our panel attends to scale in two different ways: on the one hand, the “things” that we follow and whose lives and meanings we choose to interpret range from big to small – images, machines, and even larger assemblages such as dumping grounds. On the other hand, the things we follow unpack narratives at different spatial and temporal scales. Each of these papers unpacks ideas about cities, their history, ideas about borders and margins, communities and narratives of transformation in different ways. In so doing, they also rework conceptual formulations about scales, assemblages, and urban connections that critically shape the scholarship on cities in South Asia across the disciplines of planning, urban studies, and anthropology.
