1 - Asia Reimagined: Discovering Modern Ties Between India and China

7/6/2018
8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Location: Silveroak I, Ground Floor

With the rise of China and India on the global stage in recent years, in academia, a trend has also surged that aims to reconnect the two countries. Modern times require particular efforts as the two countries were subject to foreign rule or exploitation successively and did not engage in productive interaction for centuries. While many studies on modern Sino-Indian ties focus on international relations, with the 1962 border conflict being a frequent topic, this panel features cultural and intellectual approaches to reevaluate the ties. Hong-yuan Chu’s paper discusses how Zhang Taiyan (1869-1936), in contrast to Sun Yat-sen (1866-1925), proposed a vision of revolution that was strongly influenced by Buddhism. Yu-Ting Lee’s paper explores how modern Chinese thinkers, especially Liang Shuming (1893-1988), reconstructed Chinese and even Eastern intellectual history through digestion of Indian thought. Kamal Sheel’s paper delves into certain travel writings and uncovers the structure of mutual perception between India and China in the early twentieth century. Ke Zhang’s paper traces how the Chinese people’s concept of “nation” took shape along with the change of their understanding of the Indian independence movement; Bali Deepak’s paper addresses a broader cultural issue of the enterprise of translation between India and China; as the Hindi translator of the Four Books, he is particularly qualified for the topic. Through these papers, the authors hope that not only modern Sino-Indian ties but a more open idea of Asia (before the intellectual institutionalization of East and South Asia) can be reconsidered.
