Social movements and creative aesthetics are especially convergent within the transitional landscapes of silencing political regimes. From radio culture and videotape to the rise of a Thai new wave of cinema in the late 1990s, the frames of social movements are increasingly filtered through the audiovisual text. This panel addresses how protest resonates in these frames, and how the moral and visual economies of politics demand innovative methods to address questions about the successes and failures of representation. Following James Scott’s work on the “art of resistance,” the panel perceives creative and social media as empowering (and sometimes disempowering) texts to advance the following key questions. First, why is a particular style or narrative overlooked, repressed, or diverted toward the ends of existing power structures? Second, what are the contributions of media in the articulation of under-represented themes, especially in Southeast Asia, but also in a range of global influences? We address these questions within James Scott’s attempt to illustrate how “hidden transcripts” open routes beyond the dominant narratives of the state or class structure. In the panel, we elaborate upon of the policies and structure of political ideology in Thailand, through which counter-hegemonic works are aimed. We also imagine those who are inspired by the media framing and the political context that generates the desire for new methods of resistance. Finally, we also look to literary narratives, ethnographic themes, and discursive practices in the process of media-making, and the strategies of silence that necessitate the hidden transcript.
