Organized Panel Session

43 - Movement, Margins and Identity in India

7/6/2018
12:10 PM - 1:40 PM
Location: Casuarina, Lower Ground Floor

Despite chronic mobility in our globalized world, movement is generally seen as an aberration and settlement as the norm. Analytical visibility afforded to movement in recent times challenges this entrenched view in the social sciences. This panel consists of papers that centrally examine the disruption and displacement caused by violence in order to understand the negotiations that social groups such as Buddhists, Dalits, Sikhs, and Muslims have undertaken to reclaim spaces, citizenship, and identities after being subjected to violence.

Through this analytic lens of ‘mobilities’, ranging from displacement after violence, emplacement and homemaking in its aftermath, and rootedness despite it, this collection of studies interrogates notions of citizenship and belonging that does not easily fit into the limited yet pervasive categories of ethnicity, religion, language or caste in India. In a major departure from the literature on political violence which has largely focused on causality, these studies shift the focus on what happens after violence and challenge the view that violence is a circumscribed event confined to a singular space and time.

Drawing from and critiquing theoretical frameworks across human geography, political science, history, and anthropology, panelists present findings from extensive ethnographic and archival fieldwork and quantitative analyses conducted across four states in India, namely Delhi, Gujarat, Kashmir, and Sikkim. Panelists are part of an international working group at various stages of their careers and hail from different social science disciplines and universities in India, the United Kingdom, and the USA.
