146 - Where Media Industries Converge - Intermedial Geographies of Global Asia

7/7/2018
2:40 PM - 4:10 PM
Location: Chinar, First Floor

This panel consists of five papers on media industries in Asia. It revolves around the question of why and under what conditions media industries converge or experience an unusually heightened level of transmedia activities. If digitalization provides a crucial technological condition for media convergence, it cannot account for the specific form and trajectory of convergence in a particular national context, let alone the political, social and aesthetic implications of such convergence. These intermedial convergences thus confront “Asia’s” multi-sited geographies when media industries both seek to shape and are shaped by, contestations of globality and nation-ness. Each paper here presents an in-depth inquiry into the political economy of media convergence across media and media platforms ranging from YouTube, web-series, television, print, radio, and educational film. Each paper is also attentive to the evolving relationship between industry, audience, and political censorship. Taken together, these papers shed light on formations and re-formations of media industries in response to the prevailing technological, political, market and social conditions, as well as constructions and re-constructions of audiences in these processes as atomized spectators (Sen), politicized subjects (Coe), consumers of stardom (Lau), colonial subjects (Chan), or Internet-savvy youths (Bai). Featuring research projects on media convergence in history and the present on the same panel serves as a reminder that convergence has a long pre-digital history, which is not only fascinating by itself but also informs our study of the contemporary.
