162 - Manual or Mental? Discourses and Experiments in Education in Colonial South Asia

7/7/2018
4:30 PM - 6:00 PM
Location: Jacaranda II, First Floor

This panel brings together different discourses and experiments in education - missionary, theosophical, official and nationalist - to inquire into the conflation of caste, gender and education in colonial India and Sri Lanka. How did arguments of hereditary skill and aptitude enter into debates on technical education and industrial development? In what ways was the caste-based hierarchization of work and learning practices naturalized and inserted into different pedagogical agendas. We will explore, for instance, the varied stances that sought to reserve text-book/classroom learning for some and craft/workshop inculcation for others. Another line of inquiry would be the legitimations and institutions deployed to appropriate, recast and/or labourise household and farm-based work practices.

Current scholarship is silent on the discursive terrain of ideas and experiments that justified and authorized the separation between manual and mental in education. The historiography of craft points to the aestheticisation of the artisanal body and modes of knowledge transmission, on the one hand, and the industrialization of craft on the other. Using pedagogical interventions as entry points, we probe into the genealogy and social geography of the educational landscape as it was imagined for boys and girls in the countryside; for lower castes; for women; for the poor; and for those engaged in ‘polluting’ occupations. The idea is not only to do a worm’s eye view mapping but also to exhume the voices of the subjects of these educational experiments and to chart the afterlives of the discourses (both of resistance and complicity) that emerged from below.
