Organized Panel Session

68 - Re-Evaluating the 1950s in China-India History

7/6/2018
2:40 PM - 4:10 PM
Location: Tamarind, New Building

Histories of 1950s China and India tend to emphasize elite politics, diplomatic relations, and negotiations over what became an increasingly fractious border dispute. And yet, as recent scholarship has begun to demonstrate, lost in this monocular focus is a much richer history of connected and comparative stories involving a whole range of actors, institutions, material objects, and processes. This panel brings together three papers that seek to add to such a re-evaluation of the 1950s. Each paper focuses on a different aspect of this rich history, moving from new media and film to mathematics and global socialism. The three papers will be followed by a screening of clips from 1950s films that highlight the China/India partnership. The first paper by Tansen Sen examines the contribution of the weekly Blitz in popularizing the idea of India-China brotherhood and disseminating a positive image of the People’s Republic of China among the Indian public. In the second paper, Arunabh Ghosh explores the China-related activities of the Indian mathematician and Marxist historian D.D. Kosambi, who made three trips to China during the 1950s. The third paper by Krista Van Fleit compares Sino-Indian film exchanges in the 1950s with the contemporary surge in popularity of Aamir Khan’s films in China to show how in both periods the circulation of Hindi film in China exceeds the simple state narrative of competition or cooperation. Finally, our chair Prasenjit Duara will use the clips to facilitate an audience-focused discussion of the period.
