Organized Panel Session

131 - Cyberspaces In/of India

7/7/2018
12:10 PM - 1:40 PM
Location: Mahogany, First Floor

This panel aims to interrogate differential aspects of the evolving Indian "cyber-public." In the contemporary moment, there are both macro and micro-scale battles being fought for control over the world's youngest and increasingly digitally active demographic. While multinational corporations are seeking control of the material infrastructure of "Digital India," participants (both individual and community-based) are battling over the content being disseminated through these mediums.

The panel engages with postcolonial studies, digital humanities, and communication studies to focus on a diverse range of texts and contexts that can be said to constitute an "Indian" cybercultural sphere. Notably, it also foregrounds issues of caste, class, religion, and language within this digital mediascape. Rukmini Pande will open the discussion through a theoretical consideration of what hybridized elements of such a cybersphere may be termed postcolonial through her consideration of Youtube videos by artists such as All India Bakchod (AIB). Swati Moitra will then expand the scope of the discussion to take up the medium of Whatsapp in particular, examining how exchanges over "fake news" are being carried out in digital platforms that have so far not been explored in scholarship on the issue. Next, Kajori Sen will examine the operations of mobile journalism in India with regard to the representation (and silencing) of marginalized voices within it. Finally, Samira Nadkarni will examine the ramifications of new media distribution platforms that are offering creative content catering to Indian LGBT audiences while also reinforcing dominant ideologies around these identities at the same time.
