109 - Building Bridges: Inter-Canonical Criticism of South Asian Literature

7/7/2018
10:20 AM - 11:50 AM
Location: Casuarina, Lower Ground Floor

In recent decades scholars have investigated how European colonialism refashioned traditional knowledge systems in Asia. In India, the late colonial period was marked by a growing interest in writing literary histories and constructing literary canons for local languages based on contemporary European criticism and aesthetics. Despite being entwined with the problematic agendas of their time, these colonial-era formulations of literary history and canon continue to shape scholarship of South Asian literature. This uncritical adherence to the boundaries of pre-established canons becomes problematic for scholarship when it limits our understanding of how creative movements circulated beyond the conventional domains of canons.

This panel seeks to investigate how literary production in South Asia has been shaped by ideas, aesthetics, and movements that crossed the inherited canonical boundaries currently in force. Questions this panel will address include: How did multi-lingual movements such as feminism adopt different aesthetics and poetics in different literary communities and cause shifts of canonical boundaries? Why were certain writers and genres excluded from canons, and what has been the effect of these exclusions on our understanding of literary history and the interactions between literary cultures? Last but not least, this panel argues that due to porous boundaries between canons, altered cultural and literary contexts rooted in new post-colonial realities, and influences of global literary concerns, an inter-canonical approach has great potential for both recovering traditional systems of South Asian literature in some cases and establishing new systems in others.
