Inter-area/Border Crossing

Organized Panel Session

79 - Construction of Migrants’ Memories: Representing Migration through Written and Visual Narratives.

7/6/2018
4:30 PM - 6:00 PM
Location: Jacaranda II, First Floor

In an age of growing migration flows and creation of larger transnational communities, scholarly works on migrants’ memories, exilic narratives, diasporic filmmaking and the construction of ‘new’ historical archives that accommodate stories/histories of migrants, exiles and refugees have also been growing. Works discussing the connection between poverty and migration, exile and alienation, memory and nostalgia - to mention just a few relevant themes - have underlined the blurring of individual recollections and collective memories, in the vein of Maurice Halbwachs, instigating the construction of archives of migrant memories increasingly more complex and relevant for a nuanced understanding of contemporary world history of human mobility and nomadic trajectories. This panel aims at discussing the way migrant memories and narratives of migration and diaspora are challenging the traditional concept of the ‘archive’, whilst at the same time pointing towards new directions in the research fields of globalization, migration flows and memory studies. Papers in this panel shed light on a variety of cases from memory construction of the diasporic community, to diaspora literature and the cinematic representation of the migrants among other issues of significance for those crossing borders.

Through a recollection of memories this panel engages both one's personal life trajectories and the different ‘ideas’ of Asia’s geographies about South Asia. It also addresses the question of being a migrant today, with the growing awareness of the importance of overcoming cumbersome bureaucratic processes to find a place to call ‘home’ beyond the emotional geographies of memory, identity, nostalgia, and belonging.
