Inter-area/Border Crossing

Organized Panel Session

155 - Commodities in Motion: Objects in (Trans)local Connections in Asia

7/7/2018
4:30 PM - 6:00 PM
Location: Kadamba, Lower Ground Floor

This panel explores the theme of “Asia in Motion” by delving into the roles of commodities in fostering local and translocal connections and encounters across several regions of Asia. Adopting theoretical approaches that emphasize the agency of both human and non-human actors, the papers in this panel demonstrate the ways in which the social life of both objects and people collectively participate to build networks across Asia. Pu’er tea, fabrics, gemstones, and carpets are some of the key commodities that are studied by the panelists. Kunbing Xiao explores the role of Pu’er tea in fostering interactions among different ethnic groups in the border regions of Yunnan from the mid-17th century to the late 18th century. Ka-Kin Cheuk examines the everyday process in which fabric materiality has been culturally de-emphasized by Indian traders in southeast China. Hyeju Jeong reveals how Chinese Muslim diasporas based in Saudi Arabia have entangled themselves with the transport of small-scale commodities from production centers such as Guangzhou since the 1990s, thereby initiating latent religious and kinship connections that have provided social leverage back home in Saudi Arabia. Finally, Alice Lin analyzes the meanings, practices, and trade of colored gemstones in three cities across India-Pakistan, showing how the value in the social realm, as well as the market, intersect. Together these papers highlight the important agency of commodities in connecting varied ethnic groups, markets, and geographical regions of Asia.
