12 - Korea and Modernization Theory: Transpacific Critique of the Cold War Korean Studies

7/6/2018
8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Location: Willow, First Floor

This panel deals with the relation between modernization theory and Korean Studies in the US and Korea during the Cold War era. It is quite well known that modernization theory had a great impact upon the US and Korean society, particularly in the 1960s onwards. However, there have been fewer endeavors to trace the genealogies of the theory in Korean Studies. Thus, this panel aims to bring several case studies on important but less understood scholars to the academic sphere, by carefully reviewing their writings and activities. Those scholars such as Vincent Brandt (Itagaki), Gregory Henderson (An), Kajimura Hideki (Hong), and Jin-Hwan Park (Kim) were all actively working in the 1960s and 70s in Korea, Japan, and the US. Through this project, the panelists will reveal not the simple causal relations between the theory and the Korean Studies, a theme that became a cliché. The presenters will rather expound more nuanced explanations about scholars themselves, by showing their epistemological changes in their works and activities. Thus, while historicizing the modernization theory, our panel papers will show how the knowledge of Korea was imagined and shaped in the US, Japan, and Korea. Furthermore, this panel will deal with the legacy of this theory in contemporary Korean Studies and seek alternative ideas.
