62 - Evaluating Labour in Contemporary Asia: Concepts and Contexts

7/6/2018
2:40 PM - 4:10 PM
Location: Jacaranda II, First Floor

Understanding labor in contemporary Asia stands to gain much from the combined exploration of both genealogical and geographic lenses. The papers in this panel explore the link between the structure of production (influenced by the nature of capital in its state and non-state avatars) and the nature of work (conceptually or empirically). They evaluate the limits introduced by context on concepts (precarity, skilled work, worker safety and sustainability).

The first paper explores the conceptual territory of informality and precarity and debunks the ‘placelessness’ associated with both terms, by concretely situating their implications in the state-policy contexts of China and India.
The second paper illustrates the changing notions of skills that operate in the Indian automobile industry resulting from the consistent influence of the organization of production on the nature of work. The third paper evaluates the link between the structure of production and the nature of work using the lens of working conditions. The paper illustrates the differential impact of industrial accidents on workers located at different rungs of the labor hierarchy even within state-sponsored industry.

Questions of context and concept resurface in the fourth paper, which argues for a reconsideration of mainstream environmental movements’ approach to technology by utilizing nuances available in the demands and aspirations of diverse fish workers of India. The panel seeks to interrogate whether conventional categorizations – of concepts or spatial locations – are adequate in making sense of the transitions that labor has witnessed in the recent past in India and China.
