7/7/2018

Location: Jacaranda I, First Floor

The papers in this panel draw our attention to the circulation and transmission of images, mainly patterns and motifs, in various art forms crossing China and other regions in Asia from the 4th to the 12th century, when medieval China was highly inspired by cultural exchange and integration. The four case studies provide a wide-ranging horizon of transcultural imagery travels in Asia through detailed analysis: XU Duo explores the transmission of musical instruments and performing styles on the Silk Routes in the 4th century by comparative visual studies involving the Amarāvatī and Ajanta caves (India), the Buddhist grottoes in Xinjiang province (China), and the Dunhuang Mogao grottoes (China). LIN Chun-I investigates the significant changes in the design of ornaments on ceramic wares from Northern Qi (550-577) to Tang (618-906) China and explores the factors behind the changes. WANG Yizhou traces the origins of designs on the pictorial screens from the imperial Shōsō-in Repository and examines how the Japanese court in the Nara period (710-794) visualized Tang China and other cultures in Asia. TU Chiao-Hui reveals the long-neglected cross-cultural interaction between the Khmer Empire and Song China during the 12th century by providing a comparative visual study of their dragon motifs. This panel focuses on the question: How the transcultural interaction between China and other Asian regions was reflected in the imagery represented in the material and visual culture.
