158 - Translocalization Across Asia

7/7/2018
4:30 PM - 6:00 PM
Location: Magnolia, Lower Ground Floor

In various fields of the humanities and social sciences, the concept of translocalization is gaining momentum as an agency-oriented approach that addresses the dynamics of mobility, migration, and socio-spatial interconnectedness. By exploring the emergence of multidirectional and overlapping networks that facilitate the exchange of cultural resources, practices, and ideas, translocalization seeks to capture complex socio-spatial interactions in a holistic, actor-oriented, and multidimensional understanding (Greiner 2013). The four papers, each addressing localities and mobilities from a distinct perspective, demonstrate how the employment of translocalization can refine our understanding of the processes of simultaneity and identity formation. By presenting alternative historiographies of the circulations of knowledge in a globalizing context, this panel offers a stimulating perspective on temporal dynamics, path dependencies, socio-spatial dynamics, on the one hand, while challenging dichotomous geographical conceptions, on the other. Barua's paper discusses how transregional Buddhist connections in colonial India enabled Chittagong Buddhists to revive a local identity related to medieval Indian Buddhism. Vendova’s paper is a transregional study of the Buddha’s life episode of the Temptation of Mara based on texts and images from India, Central Asia, and China. Qu’s paper, by examining both primary and secondary sources of the Buddhist deity Hāritī, investigates the interconnectedness of the translocal spatial dynamics in India, Bali, and China. Finally, Huang’s paper examines the exotic presentation of Hindustani music instruments on the stage of reality shows in China, tracing how the tabla or sitar acts - amidst a translocalized network of instruments - to empower the performing musician.
