Organized Panel Session

Mobilizing Asia: Cultural and Political Migration, Imagination, and Identity in the Real and the Virtual

Saturday, July 7
12:10 PM - 1:40 PM
Location: Cypress, New Building

This interdisciplinary panel collects papers on cinema, literature, TV drama, and art. Ling Zhang’s paper examines the imagery and imagination of “Nanyang” in two 1930s Shanghai leftist films attempting to unravel the intricate entanglement of migration, mobilization, and circulation within and surrounding 1930s Chinese cinema. Maya Hamada’s paper explores a clash of identities and the tension between colonialism and anti-colonialism via a close reading of works by Yang Qianhe, a Taiwanese woman who published a novel written in Japanese during Taiwan’s colonial period. Dandan Chen’s paper investigates the transplantation of Chinese tradition in the age of globalization by examining Tun Dun’s new production of Chinese Kunqu opera Peony Pavilion at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Xi Chen’s paper explores transnational corporations in the Chinese TV industry and interrogates China’s “facing south” orientation and moves towards cultural connections across Southeast Asia, which aims at a cultural-maritime Silk Road through Chinese TV drama (with a hero performed by a Thai actor). Together, these papers explore various cultural imaginations hidden under the skin of “overlapping” images of cross-national writings, creations, and performances, influenced by the changing strategic, diplomatic, and cultural environments in different areas in Asia and in the West over the past 100 years. The explorations move between a variety of fields, from reimagining real places to the production of exotic, transnational realities to negotiating conflicting identities to adapting revered cultural spaces within the context of globalization.
