The Geographical Indications (GI) of Goods is an internationally recognized form of intellectual property that legitimizes a product as ‘authentic’ by linking it and its producers to a specific geographic site, deemed as its ‘site of origin’. As a part of the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement, which instituted the current GI framework, India enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. Today, under this Act, a hereditary style of narrative cloth paintings, which belonged to the repertoire of traditional skill of artists spread across the region of Telangana, has been registered as Cheriyal paintings, named after the village that is home to the only practicing artist community.

Closely looking at certain requisites of the GI of Goods Act that needed to be fulfilled for compliance prior to registration of Cheriyal paintings, this paper demonstrates how the everyday life of this art practice offers alternative definitions of ‘place’, ‘community’ and ‘belongingness’. On the one hand, the nation-state emphasizes on the calculation of physical coordinates to collapse geography of a territory with geography of a practice. On the other, this paper reveals the way in which this fixity is dismantled and interrogated through the practitioners’ narratives about inheritance and apprenticeship. Effectively, this paper reflects upon how practitioners assemble together a critical language from within the practice to not only respond to constructed discourses but to also open up new epistemological possibilities and new paradigms of historical research.
