Organized Panel Session

2 - Travel Infrastructures and Identity in the Upper Himalayas

Saturday, July 7
2:40 PM - 4:10 PM
Location: Mahogany, First Floor

This paper discusses the connection between road construction in the upper Himalayas (Lahaul Spiti and Ladakh) and construction of identity (gender, national, caste and class). I present travel narratives of migrant road builders working for the Border Roads Organization to lay out a more nuanced conception of national development and defense. This paper is based on over 6 years of mobile ethnographic research in Lahaul-Spiti, Ladakh and Jharkhand part of which is documented through my blog www.migrantlabourers.wordpress.com/about/
