Organized Panel Session

Landscapes and Timescapes of Socio-technical Imaginaries

Saturday, July 7
2:40 PM - 4:10 PM
Location: Tamarind, New Building

This session will discuss historical and contemporary examples on the intersections between various imaginaries on nature, history, and technology in modern South Korea. Tae-Ho Kim's paper traces the imagined landscapes associated with developmentalist state ideology in the 1970s and the 1980s. The South state repeatedly presented images of newly modernized rural communities, based on modern technology, to fully mobilize rural people and nature. Bradley Tatar's paper examines how the famous prehistoric petroglyph in Bangudae, located in Ulsan, has been interpreted and reinterpreted by Koreans, by reflecting local and national needs and utilizing modern technology. Hyomin Kim focuses on a still ongoing debate on wind turbines in Jeju Island. She points out that Jeju people's different engagement in the wind energy project resulted from their different "situatedness," reflecting the island's historical relationship with the Korean mainland. Combining these three case studies, this session will illustrate how imaginaries on nature, history, and technology can be interwoven to shape people's specific understanding of nature and society.
