India in Contemporary Japanese Literature: Myths versus Reality

Friday, July 6
4:30 PM - 6:00 PM
Location: Gulmohar, First Floor

India’s relation with Japan in the trade and strategic fields have shown considerable improvement in recent years. India, through its Look East policy and Act East policy, has shifted its focus to East Asia and envisages a strong relationship with all East Asian Countries. Especially, India’s relation with Japan has entered the age of Global Strategic Partnership which promises great potential for the future. However, people to people relationship and mutual knowledge of each other’s culture and society is the fundamental requirement for any successful bilateral relationship. Dissemination of such knowledge could be possible only through literature, art, and cinema. In this contest, it is pertinent to examine how India is portrayed in Japan, especially in its literary works. Our panel would like to examine the works of some of the famous writers like Akutagawa Ryunosuke, Endo Shusaku, Hotta Yoshie, Mishima Yukio and the romantic poet Kitamura Tokoku to perceive how India is depicted in their works. The papers proposed by this panel will not only try to give a vivid picture of India’s image in Modern Japanese literature but also emphasize the role of literature in strengthening bilateral relations.
