1 - Unfolding Circulations in the Indian Ocean: Textiles, Weavers and Heritage Between Diu and Mozambique

Friday, July 6
12:10 PM - 1:40 PM
Location: Silveroak I, Ground Floor

The island of Diu, a former Portuguese territory on the coast of Gujarat, was one of the most important textile trading ports in Western India with intimate links with Mozambique and Eastern African coast. With the advent of industrial mills in Gujarat in mid-nineteenth, its economy declines, transforming a previous cosmopolitan and active port city in a dormant town. At the same time, European colonial powers increased the territorial apropriation of their African colonies, opening wide oportunities of trade in the continent's hinterland.
This presentation focusses on the need to have a broad and multi-sited perspective in order to understand the changes in the Indian Ocean world at the turn of the twentieth century, having centre of discussion as how events have taken place simultaneously in British India and Mozambique provoked the economic decline of Diu and enhanced new migration routes to Mozambique of what were considered subaltern social classes.
Drawn in ethnographic and archival research, this presentation calls attention to the multitude of actors circulating in the Indian Ocean, taking decisions and engaging with activities that were often beyond colonial control. This reminds us that political powers were only able to control part of the extraordinary movement of people, commodities, and ideas across the waters. At the same time, migratory fluxes in the region carry with them intangible heritages that dialogue with what can be called materialities of geographical dispersion that do not erase a sense of localized life stories.
