Organized Panel Session

Changing Configurations: the Himalayas and Trans- Himalayas c.500 BCE-1950 CE

Friday, July 6
10:20 AM - 11:50 AM
Location: Silveroak I, Ground Floor

This panel engages with histories of the western and central Himalayan regions through vignettes across different temporal frames.
The first paper suggests close linkages between various’ mortuary’ cultures found in archaeological sites in the Indian Himalayas and Tibetan (China) Trans-Himalayas dates to c. 500 BCE. The second paper studies archaeological remains in Ladakh (Jammu and Kashmir) and posits close links with the Buddhist polity of Guge-Purang (Western Tibet) in the tenth and eleventh centuries. The third paper argues that the break up of the Tibetan Empire (c. 7th -9th century) led to the emergence of Kingdoms in Jumla ( Khasa Kingdom of Far Western Nepal and Western Tibet), Joshimath (Uttarakhand) Bhramaur (Himachal Pradesh). The Khasa Kingdom (11th -14th centuries) initiated a process of agricultural change that eventually transformed the middle Himalayan landscape and led to new alignments on the southern front. The fourth paper focusses on issues of kingship and Rajput identity in the southern regions of the Western Himalayas in the early nineteenth century, immediately after the entry of the East India Company. The fifth paper reviews colonial and postcolonial histories of the Western Himalayas that underline its integration with the Indian sub-continent where the trans- Himalayan/ Tibetan connection is reduced to a border and the Himalayas become borderlands.

Through this discussion, the panel hopes to interrogate Indian nationalist narratives of contemporary administrative boundaries as cultural markers across’ homogeneous empty time.’ (Anderson, Benedict Imagined Communities 1983 p.24)
