Organized Panel Session

Religion, Art and Sites of Worship: Network Through and Beyond South Asia

Friday, July 6
12:10 PM - 1:40 PM
Location: Willow, First Floor

South Asia evolved into a distinctive geo-cultural region through the myriad of historical experiences and different dimensions of cultural exchanges. The present panel proposes to trace these paradigms of experiences in shared culture especially among the grassroots, at levels where every-day and mundane chores take people and communities to places, societies and cultural orbits different from their own. Such engagements often remain peripheral to the main functions of the emerging state societies and yet get integrated with expansive ventures of the state/polity. The papers presented by the five panelists will traverse the paths of connectivity often beyond the conventional parameters of political – territorial orbits, observed especially through a trajectory of religious practices and manifestations of cultural experiences in the form of art. The first presentation explores early religious itinerancy and memorializing of sacred spaces or geography and the second observes integrations occurring in the peripheries of a burgeoning political order where religious sites become significant. While such histories reveal cultural exchanges and negotiations between disparate and distinct worlds in a shared history within what we now consider as sub-regional and local orbits, other three panelists dwell on interregional and extra-regional contacts stretching out beyond South Asia. They explore the possibilities of connections and shared experiences, remnants of which are found manifest in sacred forms and art motifs, often imbued with multiculturality.
