1 - Another Form of “Amusing Us to Death”: Experience, Ideology and the Labor Control in the Production of Variety Shows

Friday, July 6
10:20 AM - 11:50 AM
Location: Magnolia, Lower Ground Floor

Compared with traditional industries, the logic of labor control in culture industries have changed. In order to reduce the labor cost, the variety show production companies use interns who should not be recognized as workers. We found that in this entertainment labor process, the manager transforms the unpaid labor into entertainment through relational-working, heightening of atmosphere, and ennobling. Different from traditional industries, this labor control is not based on organizational institution and economic motivation, but relies on the relationship, atmosphere, feelings and other cultural factors. At the same time, the logic of Ideological Fantasy behind the Manufacturing consent is as Zizek said: the laborers experience a real ideology, pursuing their own plus-de-jouir in the ideological reality. In the end, the laborers experience another form of "amusing themselves to death" and devote themselves to work.
