Bridge Boundaries: Culture Phenomena and the Change of Social Life

Friday, July 6
10:20 AM - 11:50 AM
Location: Magnolia, Lower Ground Floor

Symbolic boundaries, which maintain a moral order of this world, exist in every aspect of our society. They separate one social norm from another. Boundaries can be found between work and leisure, real life and virtual community, different nation-states, etc. In social life, people try to bridge different kinds of boundaries between those seemingly hostile worlds with diverse strategies. However, how do we bridge symbolic boundaries? Zelizer, an economic sociologist, emphasizes the importance of interpersonal relations in economic activities, and she points out that the “relational work” is one of the strategies to bridge boundaries.

In this panel, by analyzing different cultural phenomena, we will discuss how people bridge different symbolic boundaries, and how these activities change our social life. Dr. Wenjuan Jia studies the production of the cultural product - the variety show on TV. She reminds the mechanism of how managers bridge the labor production and labor reproduction. And this makes college interns consent to devote their free labor. Dr. Yiran Liu analyses the culture of consumerism in current China. After illustrating the case of the fever of YSL lipsticks in China, she discusses how the internet posting bridges the virtual world, real world, and traditional culture, adding new power to the traditional lipstick “witchcraft”. Dr. Kosugi focuses on the postwar Japan’s social movements. She will show how transnational ties bridge different activists from different countries and inspire students to define the meaning of their struggles.
