Organized Panel Session

Genealogy/ies of Geographies: Imageries, Negotiations and Representations

Saturday, July 7
10:20 AM - 11:50 AM
Location: Maple, Lower Ground Floor

Lucien Febvre while cautioning against ‘geographical determinism’ argued that a river can be seen by a society as a barrier, by another as a mode of transportation and communication and another society will see immense potential for irrigation. Thus, it is evident that geography/ies as seen by societies are the product of a complex set of negotiations. Utilitarian understanding of geography is often complimented by aesthetics, literary norms, strategic considerations, etc. Most of the times, Asian landscape has been depicted as a land of immense agrarian wealth with very rich flora and fauna. Indian peninsula is often depicted as a land of rivers with tremendous natural agrarian potential full of natural resources. However, there are important aberrations to larger generalizations.

Most of the times, these aberrations have been depicted as non-conformists in relation to the conventional imageries. Although researches in social, economic and political history based on local-vernacular literary as well as archival documents were able to bring out the continuum as well as disjunctions in the genealogies of geographies. The proposed panel makes an attempt to examine the historical evolution of genealogies of regional variations in the imaginations of geographies which at times constitute counter-narratives. Characterization of geography has also influenced the imagery of communities, the process of peasantization, the emergence of religious cults, literary representations, folk imagination, etc. Panelists relying upon diverse prism, which include analysis of cultural-hegemonic and local concerns depicted in vernaculars, will analyze the processes which influence constructions of genealogies of geographies.
