Where China Meets Southeast Asia: Social and Cultural Change in the Border Regions edited by Grant Evans, et al is a pioneering work that captured the changes of borderlands of the Mekong region at the end of the Cold War. This was the era when traditional political borders were reshaped by the policy of economic regionalization. Various Chinese-local interactions have been explored in this book with an emphasis on the variety of responses to border transformations through mobility and network building. My paper is based on a recent research to examine the role of China and the new wave of Chinese investments that has transformed the borderlands of the Mekong region since the 2010s. In its path to establish a transnational market society that spills over across the region, China, in collaboration with the Southeast Asian states, has not only put the old frontier to an end, but has also turned various borderlands into a neo-liberalized space where Chinese market force both sustains a civilizing mission and regulates local lives. New state apparatuses such as zoning technologies and the "Going Out Policy" have facilitated the influx of Chinese capital and new generation of Chinese migrants into the borderlands that result in new class relations.  It is this recent regime of Chinese-led development that has characterized the Mekong border in a decade after "Where China meets Southeast Asia".
