Organized Panel Session

Punjabi Patriarchies: Women In and Out of Punjab

Friday, July 6
4:30 PM - 6:00 PM
Location: Tamarind, New Building

This panel asks: How can we establish critical frameworks for approaching Punjab and Punjabi studies? In what ways have gender and sexuality been marginalized in Punjabi scholarship? Further, in thinking about questions of migration and diaspora, we ask: how can we do a transnational analysis of Punjab? And what do we learn from thinking about Punjabi patriarchies across borders? By focusing on questions of kinship, state-sanctioned violence, electoral politics, and literature, this panel seeks to open up the ways that gender and gendered violence are understood in Punjab. The panel also thinks critically about religion by emphasizing a variety of concerns including questions about Sikh identity, Muslim representation, and the multiple ways in which these Punjabi religions are entangled. Our emphasis on pushing against the spatial and temporal boundaries of current Punjabi scholarship opens up the possibilities for imagining the overlapping, mobile, and shifting ways that Punjab functions in larger conversations across Asian Studies.
