Re-Asserting Asian Identities: Global Markets and Local Justice in Human Health in Asia

Friday, July 6
4:30 PM - 6:00 PM
Location: Marigold, New Building

This panel examines the re-assertion of Asian cultural and national identities through the lens of healthcare practices in Asia. It provides an interdisciplinary approach to analyze interactions at local, national and international levels. In the 20th century, Western medical practices focusing on alleviation of symptoms of the disease and related use of profitable synthetic pharmaceuticals displaced traditional medicine. In recent years, Asian countries (and their political leaders) including China and India have returned to traditional medicine practices as a way to cope with urgent public health needs. This shift also reflects a resurgent nationalism that challenges Western pharmaceutical company market dominance in local markets.

Deshpande analyzes constructions of national identity within traditional knowledge systems including Ayurveda and yoga. Gupta unpacks the notion of “epidemic” with an ethnographic study of substance abuse in India. Comparing policy and practice in China, India, and Japan, Ibata-Arens analyzes impacts on innovation system development and community stakeholder rights of shifts in international intellectual property rights regimes targeting biomedicine. Raj analyzes socio-political intersections including gender and caste affecting access to healthcare in India. Sen explores concepts in power through the lens of healthcare diplomacy in traditional medicine, comparing India to Cuba and the United States. In sum, this panel examines the role of the state in navigating the space between global market demands and the health of its citizens, broadly defined. Facilitating audience participation, all papers will be available a month in advance and presentations will be limited to 10 minutes allowing ample time for discussion.
