Organized Panel Session

Queering Science, Sex, and Bodies: Histories of Subaltern Sexualities from Transnational Asia

Saturday, July 7
4:30 PM - 6:00 PM
Location: Amaltas, Lower Ground Floor

This panel brings together scholars who explore hitherto marginalized histories of science, sex, and bodies from transnational Asia. In recuperating these queer histories, Sanjam Ahluwalia, Howard Chiang, and Todd A. Henry not only challenge otherwise dominant, Eurocentric mappings of science, sex, and bodies, but they also illuminate how Asian locations contributed to new and competing conceptions of non-normative sexuality and gender variance across the modern world. Existing scholarship on the Euro-American world as a sexual subject has largely denied historical agency and sexual subjectivity to actors in locations such as India, Taiwan, and South Korea. Usually bracketed off as Chinese (or Sinophone) Studies, Korean Studies, and South Asian Studies, these Asian geographies are, moreover, rarely placed in the same dialogue. As three post-colonial nation-states, a transnational consideration of these sites will allow us to draw new connections of a dynamic region located between earlier histories of empire (Japanese and British) and newer trajectories of the Cold War. The panel also spotlights subaltern sexualities insofar as Ahluwalia, Chiang, and Henry examine the articulations of homosexuality, transsexuality, and intersexuality, respectively.  Although seemingly marginal to the development of science and the formation of post-colonial nation-states, interest in these “unruly subjects” reveals important connections between the normalizing function of medicalized sexual knowledge and such processes as capitalist accumulation, heteropatriarchal hierarchies, and anti-Communist militarism.
