3 - Reinventing The News Cycle: Making Mobile Journalism Viable for Diversity

Saturday, July 7
12:10 PM - 1:40 PM
Location: Mahogany, First Floor

With over 1 billion mobile phone users in India, the news industry has been trying in different ways to break ground on mobile journalism, but in a country where there is already an existing multiplicity of diverse narratives, social, political, and economic, the question that has been repeatedly raised within editorial and technological spheres is whether national news can be tailored to reach specific audiences that are increasingly demanding a more regional approach and how it can be sustainably converged with the existing spaces and technologies.

The Indian experience of mobile journalism so far has seen two primary forms of evolution: Firstly in the niche space of English news, which has followed the international model in creating and marketing its content, and secondly in the spaces of amplifying vulnerable voices, and creating content for those who have either never had or have lost representation in mainstream media. The challenge going ahead for the Indian news system is to create a comprehensive system that addresses different linguistic and regional expectations with the increasing democratization of access, and ensures that the elements of society that are already under-represented in existing news formats, get a space in the more escalatable model of mojo. This paper will examine the existing formulas used by Khabar Lahariya and Aadiwasi Janajagruti and model how that can be used in national media to integrate those narratives into the voices of existing privilege.
