Location: Jacaranda II, First Floor

After the twice transitions from the local capital of Wuyue Kingdom (907-978) to a prefecture city in Northern Song (960-1127), and then becoming the capital of Southern Song, Hangzhou still was a Buddhist world, abounded with Buddhist temples in it in the early period of Southern Song. With the Song court came to the south area, the number of Daoist temples, especially the imperial Daoist palaces and temples, rapidly increased and considerably enhanced the importance and influence of Daoism in Hangzhou. On the spatial distribution of Daoist temples, the intensive degree in core areas (including the imperial city, the capital city and a part of the area surrounded West Lake) was relatively higher than the other areas. In other words, the transformation of religious space in Hangzhou was unsymmetrical, to focus on the inner urban area and ignore the surrounding region and affiliated counties. In the process to refresh the religious space in Hangzhou, the Song court abandoned the ambition to overall transform the religious landscaped and establish the all-round advantage of Daoism; constructed and strengthened the local advantage of Daoism in the considerably limited religious space of capital, by the way of spatial invasion and substitution. It revealed the official character of Daoism in Southern Song in the new capital area; and partly changed the absolutely dominant position of Buddhism in Hangzhou, to reconstruct this sacred city, expanding the living space of Daoism in this Buddhism-dominated city.
