Organized Panel Session

Southeast Asia Migration as a Source of Racial Exclusion, Economic Exploitation and Social Stratification

Friday, July 6
10:20 AM - 11:50 AM
Location: Gulmohar, First Floor

Southeast Asia migration flow, globally and intra-regionally, is known to be very high (both historically and in contemporary age of neoliberal capitalism). Overwhelming majority of these migrants are strictly speaking economic migrants that are looking for better means of living for themselves and their families. It is obvious that in both of the home/host societies, the migration creates specific socio-economic and political conditions sometimes subjecting the migrants into a position of second-class citizens and even neo-slavery conditions. Recently, some developing phenomena in Southeast Asia migration appeared - the increasing number of migrant workers, rising isolation of migrant communities, parallel power structures of home/host societies concerning the governance of migrants, growing social stratifications, high intolerance of illegality, etc. But, it is not clear whether these are parts of a common trend or only isolated historical contingencies.
In all this in their minds, the organizers of the panel believe that it should be better understood how the migration contributes to the socio-economic stratification and civic exclusions of the migrants in home/host societies. It is also important to better understand the illegality involved in the migratory process and show its consequences. Given all this, the main objective of the panel is to bring together specialists on Southeast Asian labor migration and discuss various topics related to these phenomena.
