5 - AyurGenomics and P4 Medicine: Prakriti as Phenotype and the Creolisation of Tridosha

Saturday, July 7
8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Location: Willow, First Floor

Digitalisation, big data analytics, consumer devices, molecular genetics and the promise of personalised genomic mapping for less than a thousand dollars, heralds, under the sign of systems biology, P4 medicine: predictive, preventive, personalised and participatory. Future physicians may be personal trainers who will presumably be able to predict, based on individual genomic maps and proteins from a drop of blood, incipient diseases. They will offer future clients, under the sign of ‘scientific wellness’, a chance to prevent diseases like cancer through a personalised and participatory regimen of diet, nutrition, exercise and medication. But transiting to personalised medicine based on gene mapping, given genetic polymorphism and other such spoilers, if contemporary AyurGenomics is to be believed, is none too easy. This is where Ayuvedic prakriti, based on the tridosha theory of vata, pitta and kapha, and glossed as phenotype, could ostensibly provide a way of linking persons to molecular and genomic correlates. This paper will speculate whether Ayurgenomics is the latest avatar in a long and well established attempt to update and validate Ayurveda by translating its nosology and founding concepts into contemporary biomedical categories. Or is Ayurgenomics, rather than a well-established attempt to ‘validate’ Ayurveda by biomedicine, a new mode of interlocution that offers P4 medicine a conceptual scaffolding to fulfil its promissory dream? In either case, the paper will speculate on what exactly is meant by AyurGenomics: is it science or is it Ayurveda; or is it, through translation and gloss, the making of a creole?
