The Modern School and Its Genealogy: South Asian Stories

Friday, July 6
4:30 PM - 6:00 PM
Location: Maple, Lower Ground Floor

What remains of the school in times of mediatized learning, private tuitions, and coaching classes? This panel places this popular rhetorical question as a historical and sociological one. The remaking of school education in India in tune with the globalized and liberalized economy remains a much-debated issue. The panel seeks to challenge the state versus market framework that structures this debate and projects itself onto the past. This is done by highlighting the complex process of the evolution of the school as an institutional form from the colonial times to the present across the diverse geographies of South Asia.
The papers break down the idea of the modern school-a product of the colonial encounter-into its constituent elements. The school then emerges as a configuration of the multiple pedagogic processes in the society centered on teachers, students, classrooms, curriculum and modes of communication as well as the intangible affects that are produced and circulated in and through the school. These constituent parts act upon each other and are sites of continuous negotiation and contestation. The panel creatively draws upon disciplinary frameworks like history, sociology, and childhood studies and their methodologies. With papers both on the colonial period and the post-liberalization era, the panel also questions the usefulness of the colonial/post-colonial chronological binary in understanding the school and highlights the specific temporalities that have been built into the school in the course of its evolution.
