2 - Cultural Relationship between Thailand and Japan: Continuity and Transformation from Pacific War to Cold War

Saturday, July 7
4:30 PM - 6:00 PM
Location: Tamarind, New Building

The aim of this study is to demonstrate the value of an industrial history approach of Thai-Japan’s international technology transfer by revealing how the cultural exchanges between the two countries are continued and transformed during a decade after the war. Specifically, the present study investigates official and private personal network in the fishing technology transfer process between Thailand and Japan from the 1930s to 1950s as a result of the prior cultural exchange.

Prior to the Pacific War in 1941, two main factors that had significantly encouraged the increase of cultural activities between the two countries were (1) the change in Thai society and (2) the high demand of Japan’s private sector for Thai employees. The change in Thai society was the rise of middle class in the capital Bangkok and they believe independent careers that were not state officials were a key to success. Meanwhile, the private sector in Japan highly demanded Thai employees to support trade growth and reduce the role of Chinese merchants who caused a boycott of Japanese business in 1927. Although these two factors were disrupted by the wartime, the private personal network remained to be active as an important element to recover the relationships between the two countries. During a decade after the war, these official and private personal networks between the two countries should be considered as the base of the quick development of their relationship since the 1960s.
