Organized Panel Session

1 - Gift of Labour: Śramdāna, Communities and Publics in postcolonial Kumaon

Saturday, July 7
8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Location: Amaltas, Lower Ground Floor

This paper will discuss the genealogy of śramdāna (gift of labour) in postcolonial Kumaon in order to understand the different regimes of labour that constitute the sphere of ‘community’ and ‘public’ in the region. Based on archival sources, oral history accounts and ethnography of instances of śramdāna from the 1940s, the paper aims to understand people’s perspectives on what constitutes śramdāna, and how it is associated with certain modalities of organizing labour. What can the idea and conduct of śramdāna tell us about people’s notions of labour, sociality and belonging? How is it articulated and mobilized? This paper will explore the social relationships embedded in śramdāna by attending to two accounts for building roads during the 1940s and 1950s. In doing so, it aims to interlink discourses on labour, community and public in Kumaon, and what that entails for ‘being pahārī’.
