Organized Panel Session

Being Pahārī : Caste, Community and Belonging in the Uttarakhand Himalayas

Saturday, July 7
8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Location: Amaltas, Lower Ground Floor

This panel explores the histories, representations and the work of being pahārī in the Kumaon Himalayas. What are the discourses and materialities that being pahārī entails? What are the forms of membership, alliances, engagements, and disavowals that constitute pahārī-ness? And how does it articulate in public and private realms of ordinary and extraordinary life in the Indian Himalayas? The panel includes papers that address such questions through the politics of claims and representation, the role of bureaucratic regulation of land ownership and labor, and the tensions between community and public as forms of belonging. It, therefore, aims to understand the region through discourses and practices that shape the manifest (and latent) identity of being pahārī, rather than the region itself.
