Organized Panel Session

2 - The Mark of a Hero: Valor in a Secular Democracy

Saturday, July 7
8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Location: Silveroak I, Ground Floor

Based on interviews, media reports and textual analysis of Indian War Comics, this paper assesses the reconfiguration of Indian democracy and secularism through graphic war narratives. This remembering and re-telling of war stories mapped on to the subcontinent's history of territorial conflicts celebrates an Indian war hero; it also visualizes the "other" soldier as antithetical to the Indian nation's ideals and morals. With this focus on new heroes, my paper takes forward two themes intrinsic to India's comic book scene: superheroes and mythological heroes.
