Susan Garstang, MD, is a Staff Physician in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at the VA Salt Lake City Healthcare System and a Clinical Associate Professor in PM&R at the University of Utah School of Medicine. She completed residency in PM&R at Baylor College of Medicine in 1998, and a Spinal Cord Injury Medicine fellowship at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in 1999. Following this, she worked at UT Southwestern Medical Center, both as a clinician and as residency program director. She moved to Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in 2005, where she was Clinical Associate Professor, and served as residency program director there until 2014. She transferred to the VA New Jersey Healthcare System in 2009, where she worked as a staff physician, as well as serving as Associate Chief of Staff for Education.

Dr. Garstang moved to the VA in Salt Lake City in 2016, and is currently a staff physician in PM&R and Deputy Associate Chief of Staff for Academic Affiliations at the VA, as well as a Clinical Associate Professor of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) at the University of Utah Medical School. She currently serves the ACGME as a member of the Review Committee for PM&R. She has been involved in both undergraduate and graduate medical education for most of her academic career, including teaching and mentoring medical students and residents. She is Board Certified in PM&R, Spinal Cord Injury Medicine, and Brain Injury Medicine. She sees patients with musculoskeletal complaints, with a focus on women’s musculoskeletal health; she also works with patients who have had strokes and spinal cord injuries, providing rehabilitative care and spasticity management for these patients.
