Dr. Gwendolyn Sowa is an associate professor in the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation and the Assistant Dean of Medical Student Research at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Sowa is currently conducting molecular level research on disc and spine deterioration and the mechanisms of back pain. She has presented her findings at both national and international conferences and symposia including the International Society for the Study of Lumbar Spine, Bergen, Norway and the World Spine III in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
Dr. Sowa received the prestigious AAP Young Academician Award in 2009. In 2008 she received both the Dennis W. Jahnigen Career Development Scholars Award and the Scott Nadler, DO Research Award from American Geriatric Society and AAPMR, repectively.
Dr. Sowa received a PhD in Biochemistry in 1997 and a degree in medicine in 2000 from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. While completing the physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Northwestern Medical School, Dr. Sowa was awarded a Rehabilitation Medicine Scientist Training K12 grant. Dr. Sowa currently serves as the Chair on the AAP Research Committee.
