This workshop aims to standardize spasticity training, education, and curriculum in residency and fellowship programs across the country and ensure that the next generation of physiatrists are trained with the highest standard of spasticity knowledge and practice as they begin to treat patients. Workshop sessions will focus on the science of spasticity including new research findings, emerging therapies to improve the quality of life for patients with spasticity, and strategies for medical educators who teach future physiatrists in spasticity management. Complimentary lunch is included in registration fee.

Sheng Li, MD, PhD is currently Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at University of Texas Health Science Center - Houston.
Dr. Li is a Professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at UTHealth Medical School. As an attending physician at TIRR, Dr. Li’s primary clinical focus is spasticity management for patients after neurological impairments, such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury and cerebral palsy. His clinical interest also includes management of post-traumatic headache with botulinum toxin injection.
Dr. Li is one of few physician scientists in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is the Director of Neurorehabilitation Research Laboratory at TIRR Memorial Hermann Research Center. His primary research interest is pathophysiology and management of spasticity. He has invented a technique – breathing-controlled electrical stimulation (BreEStim, http://www.jove.com/video/50077/) as a non-pharmacological intervention for management of spasticity and neuropathic pain. His research has been supported by NIDRR, NIH and Mission Connect grants, including an NIH R01 grant. He is currently a regular member of the Motor Function, Speech and Rehabilitation (MFSR) study section at NIH. He is the 2007 Recipient of the prestigious AAP Early Career Award.
He is a member of Association of Academic Physiatrists, American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Society for Neuroscience.
